Paying for therapy & What if my therapist isn’t in-network?

Unfortunately for all of us, insurance is confusing. Many providers, whether they’re physicians or mental health practitioners, are not in network with all insurance companies. When this happens it makes sense to worry about costs. Each of us here at Sirona Counseling is willing to charge on a sliding scale, which is a fancy way of saying we can negotiate a rate that works for you if we don’t take your insurance. We can also provide you with Superbills, which are a fancy sort of receipt for therapy services, and that can be sent to your insurance if you have out of network benefits. You might get some money back. If you’re paying out of pocket we will provide you with a Good Faith Estimate so you can see what your costs might look like.

Call your insurance to find out about your out of network benefits. The number is on the back of your insurance ID card - there may even be a separate number for mental health or “behavioral” health.

Most of us have a high deductible insurance plan nowadays and wind up paying out of pocket for many services. Paying for therapy would be similar, except your payments may or may not count toward your deductible. However, you can pay with an HSA account card or an FSA account card. Your therapist can issue you something called a Good Faith Estimate, showing what a course of treatment might cost you.

Investing in therapy is an investment in yourself, your relationships and your future.
